Application Process

The information below relates to the position of applying for the position of Deputy Sheriff of Berkeley County.

Starting Salary Schedule:

• $52,466 with No Experience
• $54,187 upon graduation from the West Virginia State Police Academy
• Up to $62,668 for West Virginia Pre-Certified Officers (based on years of service)

• Must be a U.S. Citizen
• Must be a minimum of 18 years old
• Must possess High School diploma or equivalent
• Must be in excellent health (standard weight in proportion to height)
• No criminal/police record
• Must successfully pass all examinations administered by the Civil Service Commission
• Must successfully pass a physical agility test comprised of the following challenges:
  • Sit-ups: 28 completed in one (1) minute
  • Push-ups: 18 completed in one (1) minute
  • Run: 1 ½ miles completed within 14:36 minutes/seconds

  Once hired, deputies may receive a take home vehicle, if, and ONLY IF, the individual resides within a 25-mile radius of the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Department.
